Crying is a human right not a gender right. I have often wondered why haven't I ever seen my dad breakdown after a fight or on a bad day at work or when he lost his parents. Are men always so strong that they are able to hold up to any situation. Society is used to an image of a broken woman, someone to be pitied. Since our early days we have heard its okay to cry, it will lessen the burden on your heart and mind. I understand this is a very different area where most of the readers might wonder it's so strange for a man to cry it shows he is weak, it will hamper his masculinity his sense of security, but the question here is why is that thought of so often.
When a young boy of merely five or six years cries on being bullied or after having a fight at school or on being hurt, he is often asked not to cry, only girls cry, 'boys don't cry'. Why in our society men are considered vulnerable or even worse their sexuality is questioned when they cry for any heart breaking reason. Correct me if I am wrong as I thought sexuality is a choice not an emotional issue. Crying doesn't determine one's masculinity. Have you heard the phrase 'man up' it means be brave to an unpleasant situation as per the dictionary, but you know what I think it means 'shut up' how can one be brave in an unpleasant situation, these two things don't go hand in hand.
It is often said that 'when a girl cries over a boy means she loves him but when a boy cries over girl it means he will never love another like her', somehow these stereo typical lines are so sexist. Love is an emotion and when we lose a loved one don't we all feel the absence, the pain of heart break doesn't come with a sign 'females only'. There are so many times I have seen a man on the verge of breaking up but right then his inner voice berates him and the traumatized child inside him is asked to deliver as per the toxic expectations of the universe.
It is high time that we lend our shoulder for our men to cry on, from letting them vent out their feelings. We should tell them it is okay to breakdown when you can't take it anymore. All hearts bleed and all face have masks and behind that mask we all have an onion layer which when peeled will bring tears, which should be allowed to flow. Every time a man is stopped from crying it's like he has renounced his emotions. Why is a little boy stopped from crying, is it so shameful an act that a parent should be embarrassed of . I often wonder is crying a girl's prerogative that when a boy sheepishly tries to use it he is reprimanded for it. We have to get it straight that tears are not a sign of weakness, crying doesn't make one weak but being ignorant definitely does.
Tears are not something which have to be gender biased, they flow when we are hurt, when we are happy, when we are sad, its just a way of expression. Crying doesn't make us less in any way or more in some way its just there, crying has no gender preference. Crying means we are human.
